Wheelchairs and mobility aids equipped with:

  • non-spillable liquid electrolyte batteries,
  • nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries,
  • dry cell batteries.

Wheelchairs equipped with accumulators or similar mobility aids intended for passengers whose mobility is reduced due to disability, health or age, or due to a temporary mobility problem (e.g., a broken leg), with reversible-type liquid electrolyte batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries. These batteries must comply with the following requirements :

The mobility aid must be prepared for transport to prevent:

  1. Intentional activation; and
  2. Reversible batteries may not contain free or unabsorbed liquid.

The operator must secure, using straps, ties, or other restraining devices, any battery-powered mobility aids with their batteries. The locomotion aid, accumulator(s), electrical circuits and controls must be protected against damage, particularly that caused by moving luggage, mail items or goods.

The operator must verify that:

  1. The passenger has confirmed that the battery or batteries are liquid electrolyte reversible batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries or dry cell batteries.
  2. The battery terminals are protected to prevent short circuits, such as by storing them in an appropriate container;
  3. The battery or batteries are:
    a. Adequately protected from damage by the design of the mobility aid and securely fastened to the aid. Electrical circuits must be isolated in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions; or
    b. Removed from the locomotion aid in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

A passenger is allowed a maximum of:

  1. One spare non-spillable liquid electrolyte battery; or
  2. Two spare nickel-metal hydride batteries or two spare dry cell batteries.

The operator must ensure that batteries removed from wheelchairs or mobility aids, as well as spare batteries, are transported in rigid, sturdy packaging and placed in the cargo compartment;
The operator must inform the captain of the location of locomotion aids with installed, removed and spare accumulator(s);
Passengers are advised to make prior arrangements with their operator.

Wheelchairs equipped with batteries or similar mobility aids intended for passengers with reduced mobility due to disability, health, age, or a temporary mobility issue (e.g., a broken leg), with non-spillable batteries. These accumulators must meet the following requirements:

The operator must secure any battery-powered mobility aid using straps, ties, or other restraining devices. The locomotion aid, accumulator(s), electrical circuits and controls must be protected against damage, particularly that caused by moving luggage, mail items or goods.

The operator must ensure that:

  1. The battery terminals are protected to prevent short circuits, for example by storing them in a suitable container;
  2. The battery or batteries are fitted with spill-proof vent plugs wherever possible;
  3. The battery or batteries are:
    a. Adequately protected from damage by the design of the locomotive aid and securely fastened to the wheelchair or locomotive aid.Electrical circuits must be isolated as per the manufacturer's instructions; or
    b. Removed from the mobility aid as per the manufacturer’s instructions if the aid cannot be kept upright.

The operator must load, store, stow, and unload a mobility aid equipped with non-spillable batteries in an upright position. If the mobility aid cannot be kept upright, or if the battery or batteries are not adequately protected, the operator must remove the battery or batteries and transport them in sturdy, rigid packaging as follows:

  1. The packaging must be watertight, impermeable to battery electrolytes, and protected against spillage by securing it to the pallet or cargo hold floor using appropriate methods (other than restraint by other packages or baggage), such as straps or slings;
  2. The accumulator or accumulators must be protected against short circuits, maintained in an upright position in their packaging and surrounded by compatible absorbent material in sufficient quantity to absorb the entire liquid content; and
  3. Packaging must be marked "BATTERY, WET, WITH WHEELCHAIR"  or "BATTERY, WET, WITH MOBILITY AID" and the "Corrosive" label and the "direction of loading" label.

The operator must inform the captain of the location of any mobility aid fitted with its battery(ies) and the location of any removed batteries.
Passengers are encouraged to make prior arrangements with their operator.

Wheelchairs or similar mobility aids equipped with lithium ion batteries and intended for passengers whose mobility is reduced due to disability, health or age, or a temporary mobility problem (eg.

The accumulators must be of a type meeting the requirements of each test in sub-section 38.3 of Part III of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria.

The operator must secure, by means of straps, fasteners or other restraining devices, any battery-powered locomotion aid(s) fitted with its accumulator(s). The locomotive aid, accumulator(s), electrical circuits and controls must be protected against damage, particularly that caused by moving luggage, mail items or goods.

The operator must ensure that:

  1. The accumulator terminals are protected to prevent short circuits, for example by storing them in a suitable container;
  2. The accumulator(s) are
    a. Adequately protected from damage by the design of the mobility aid and securely attached to the mobility aid. Electrical circuits must be isolated in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions; or
    b. Removed from the mobility aid in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Each battery removed from the locomotion aid must not exceed 300 Wh.

A passenger may carry a maximum of one spare lithium ion battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spare batteries not exceeding 160 Wh each.

The operator must ensure that the battery or batteries removed from the locomotion aids and any spare batteries are carried in the cabin and protected from damage (e.g. by placing each battery in a protective pouch).

The operator must inform the captain of the location of any locomotion aids fitted with their accumulator(s) and the location of any removed and spare accumulators.
Passengers are advised to make prior arrangements with each operator.
